Snacks are a bad idea, snacks at work are even worse.
I wanted to write about how to deal with the perennial problem that every office worker faces, snacks at work. From bowls of chocolates kisses and candy, to snack baskets where you drop a buck and pick something, out to coffee machines with flavored creamers beside them. This constant feast for the eyes and belly are one reason why many office workers have problems with their weight. Not only do they not burn calories by moving around, they add calories by snacking.
Walk through any office today and almost everyone will have cookies, potato chips, nuts, candies or a plastic container with food from home. All in the pursuit of managing to survive between meals.
I thought a good source for a smart way to deal with this might be Weight Watchers because they put themselves out there at the final authority on dieting and claim to have a better success rate than anyone else. Here's their guidance on snacks.
Have your own stash. That's right, in order to avoid snacks that litter the office places, bring your own healthy snacks like trail mix tossed with a few nuts and dried fruits, or cookies such as gingersnaps, graham crackers or animal crackers. Are you kidding me?
What a great way to avoid eating at work, just have your own stash and you'll be sure to avoid all the other food laying around the office.Wow, I can't believe it.
When are we as a society going to begin to understand that no matter how healthy the food, if you eat too much of it you'll get fat. That includes trail mix with nuts and animal crackers.I'll bet there's not one person in a hundred who can do this and stay away from the office food because they have their own stash.
What's wrong with the idea of saying, you don't need snacks. What, you can't go four hours from breakfast till lunch without eating something else? You can't possibly survive from lunch until dinner without something to carry you through?
We're on the wrong track here folks. The responsible thing for everyone to do would be to leave their snacks at home and not make them available.Maybe a good office policy for companies would be to say, no food at work. Can you imagine how much time is wasted by people snacking in one year not to mention the health costs.
Do you realize that eating 200 calories of snacks each day at work you'll gain almost 15 pounds? After two years 30 pounds and so on.
Let's get real folks, snacking is a bad idea, it's a bad habit and we ought to do something about it other than say, snack healthier.
My name is Larry Allen and I spent the last three years researching and analyzing why diet and exercise programs don't work for most people.
