BREAKING: Obama Announces Debt Deal
Moments ago, President Obama addressed the nation to announce that he had reached an agreement with Republicans to raise the debt ceiling, just two days from potential default.Obama did not discuss details of the deal, but it is likely very similar to the one unveiled by Congressional leaders this morning.He did say the deal was not «what I would have preferred,»but said it will «allow us to avoid default and end the crisis that Washington imposed on the rest America.» Most importantly, it will ensure we don’t have to repeat the crisis in coming months, Congressional leaders from both parties will present the plans tomorrow, urging lawmakers to support it.Watch it:
House Republicans signed on earlier in the night, after Senate Democrats did this afternoon.House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a conference call with reporters, «My hope would be to file it and have it on the floor as soon as possible.»
Even so, it appears Boehner is already pushing the goal posts.A bipartisan debt reduction committee established by the proposal is charged with looking for ways to reduce the deficit by either cutting spending or increasing revenue.But Boehner put out statement tonight titled, «Two Step Approach To Hold President Obama Accountable,» saying Republicans intend to bind the commitee with accounting rules to «effectively mak[e] it impossible for Joint Committee toincrease taxes.» Obama said in his address that he would push for a «balanced approach» on the committee.Obama has suggested previously that if tax reform doesn’t happen through the committee, he will veto an extension of Bush tax cuts when they come up at the end of 2012.

RAPIST RUES THE DAY HE VIOLATED A 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL
Phumuzani Ndlovu on Friday volunteered to show his erect manhood which now resembles a cucumber in shape and size.
Ndlovu had been in police custody while attending court to answer to rape charges, but his condition deteriorated, forcing the court to grant him bail.
During an interview at his homestead, where he stays alone, Ndlovu was in a sorry state and could hardly do anything because of agony.
He experienced the painful erection soon after sleeping with the minor, who is suspected to have been «fenced off».
The «fencing off» practice is commonly known as ulunyoka/runyoka in Zimbabwe.
Narrating his ordeal, Ndlovu said he met the girl during the night at his neighbour’s homestead where she had gone to seek overnight accommodation while on her way to a nearby boarding school.
The girl had disembarked from a bus while coming from home in Bulawayo and decided to seek temporary accommodation at one Ms Dube’s homestead, since it was late.
It is said while Ms Dube was preparing a place for her to put up for the night, Ndlovu arrived, befriended the girl and took her to his home.
«I asked her to go and sleep at my house and she agreed,» Ndlovu said, adding that he later had sexual intercourse with the minor.
«Some minutes after the first encounter, I felt some pain as if something had cut my organ and when I lit a fire to check what had happened, surprisingly, there was nothing,» he said.
«I told the girl that I was no longer feeling well and I asked her whether she had an idea of what could have been the problem, but she professed ignorance.
«I started pouring a lot of cold water on my manhood hoping there could be a change, but it remained erect and swollen.»В
He said he never slept that night due to the incessant pain.
«The following morning I tried to accompany the girl to the school, but I could not walk as far as the gate after the condition worsened,» he said.
The alleged rapist said he later consulted other people and several churches for divine intervention, but this was all in vain as his organ remained erect.
When the condition remained unchanged for a week, Ndlovu confessed about the sexual encounter with the minor leading to his arrest.
«At Nyamandhlovu Police Station I was given some painkillers, but every time I took them, I suffered severe stomach pains,» he said.
Ndlovu said he had since stopped taking the pills and had sought a*sistance from a man who hails from Binga.Because of his worsening condition, Ndlovu now walks with the aid of a walking stick and spends most of the time in bed.
The president of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association (Zinatha), Professor Gordon Chavunduka, said the girl could have been treated with juju.
«It may be possible that this man slept with a girl who could have been treated to punish anyone who would have abused her,» he said.
He said some traditional medicines could be used to do the «fencing».В В В В В
A medical practitioner, Dr Sydney Mukonoweshoro, said Ndlovu could be suffering a condition called priapism.
«The man could be suffering from a condition called priapism where the blood clots, resulting in the organ swelling,» he said.
He said the condition could be treated with conventional medicine.
The «fencing» or ulunyoka practice is still common in some communities that want to protect their women.-Sunday News

FridayOn Holding Tongues and Choosing Battles Usually, I don’t complain openly about my husband.Well, that’s not completely true.At times, I tell it like I see it when I’m talking to him about his mistakes and shortcomings.And, I never, ever hold back on complaining in general when I’m talking to my sister (tied for BFF with my husband).Also, when my girlfriends are grumbling about their husbands, I sometimes can’t help but to chime in. Still, I think it’s fair to say, that, for the most part, I zip my lips when it comes to criticizing my other half because, after all, he is my other half by choice.It would say something about me and my judgment if I bitched and moaned about everything he does and doesn’t do when I chose him and married him and had babies with him and continue to be with him.And, generally, I think I’m good at making decisions. Anyway, I don’t typically broadcast my marital gripes.Not on my blogbecause hubby has no way to fight back.Not with my coworkers or acquaintancesbecause they have enough of their own complaining to do, and it’s just not good karma (especially as my husband crosses paths regularly with many of these folks).And, especially not with my parentsbecause all they want is the best in the world for their baby girl.If I start to insinuate that my life partner and father of my children is less than perfect, then mom and dad may start to question if he’s good enough.And, frankly, I don’t need another issue like that with my parents.We have enough of our issues. So, onto my story The other night, around 8 o’clock (note: this is after Jacob’s old bedtime of 7PM), I called my father from the park.One of the first things he asked (when he heard Jacob squealing in the background as I pushed him on the swing) was «where are you?» This is when my non-open-complaining-but-hinting-at-what-I-want-to-complain-about monologue began. "We learnt many things including transport management and import and export, and I feel that these new skills and knowledge definitely enhances my job prospects," she said. Another participant, P.Nagarajan, 30, who is involved in logistics himself, said that programme would be able to help him improve his business. "I took part in this course because I felt that it would help me improve, and I think I will be able to apply what I have learnt to my work," he said. He added that the programme featured both theoretical and practical elements, such as lectures and also field activities, which made learning easy and fun. Electrician K.Murali, 35, said that the course enabled him to learn more about other things, and also felt that the logistical skills gained would complement his current work. "Having extra skills is always a bonus, and with these skills, I will now be able to better deal with logistic matters, such as transporting our electrical stock from the port to the factories," he said. He added that the programme had been a good experience, and he was also able to learn from other participants when they shared their own experiences with the group. The group were presented with certificates at a ceremony officiated by MIC Johor Baru division chairman Datuk S.Balakrishnan for completing the three-month programme.

(written 19 July) <br>So I have four days left at the centre now, (written 19 July) So I have four days left at the centre now, and then I’m off to the capital, hopefully via a national park.There is hardly any work at the clinic at the moment which is getting a bit dull; I think it’s due to the nice climate and comparative lack of mosquitoes.Clementine and Robertine are still trying (kind of as half a joke) to marry me off- Robertine didn’t seem to think it was a problem that she had four days to find a man, and organise a wedding!Then she decided that she would look for someone and send me a photo of a potential and I could ok it.She didn’t seem to think not knowing the man was a problem.... There was an interesting moment this morning when Clementine found a scorpion in an old cardboard box.We had been flicking through the nursing book that is in the clinic yesterday and discovered a section on scorpion bites.Apparently if you make scorpion liquor (scorpion drowned in alcohol) it is very good for scorpion bites.So Clementine got a pair of tweezers, and proceeded to drown the scorpion to create Scorpion Liquor! Me, and the two French volunteers went for a walk and a picnic on Sunday- it was beautiful weather, probably about 30 degrees and we were walking past banana trees and small wooden houses in the middle of nowhere.Not sure where they get their water from!We were trying to reach the sea but it was rather a long way so we walked back to the car and drove to find a nice picnic spot by the river where people ride cut out tree canoes across it.They had brought couscous, tuna and tomato salad which was a fantastic change from rice! In the evening we had an American Peace Corps girl for tea who was very nice.It was nice to speak English to someone who speaks perfect English back too!The volunteers speak very good English but sometimes it’s nice to speak with someone where it is their first language!We had power cuts all evening so most of the dinner (quiche followed by French flan for dessert) made by the volunteers which was amazing was by candle light!It turns out the Peace Corps girl is here for two years!Not sure if I would want to stay for two years- that’s a long time! The volunteers have let me copy more films which is great- the latest I have watched is Mamma Mia which is hilarious as everyone is singing in terribly English accents only to stop singing and start speaking a very strong French accents! WednesdayReason No. 1 why my kid is going to need therapy... Trevor has started talking to my stomach.He has actually been trying to do this for weeks, but it creeps me out. Historic 4th Ward: Charlotte Last weekend, we went with Megan and Joseph to walk around the 4th ward of Charlotte. It is a section of uptown Charlotte (they call the downtown area "uptown" here) that is super close to the city center and has some amazing historic homes. We found a little guide at one of the park areas and toured the fun neighborhood.For several months now Izzie has been telling either me or Chris that we are her best friend if she is especially pleased with us. She mostly says it to Chris, especially on the weekends when he is home with us. She will tilt her head and smile up at him then go, "Daddy, you're my best friend."She only says it to me if Chris isn't home- such a daddy's girl. While preparing for my husband’s deployment I would often think of all the events he would miss during his time overseas.Our «non-wedding» anniversary, 4th of July, my birthday, Labor Day, our «wedding» anniversary, his birthday, Halloween, and Thanksgiving (highly likely that Christmas will be added to this list as well)В are to name just a few.Every time I listed off the occasions he would miss, I would become annoyed, and frustrated, and sad.Not only does such aВ situation mean that my husband will miss the chance to celebrate such holidays with his favorite person (me, duh!),В butВ that I will also be forced to spend such occasions without him, and possibly alone. China, suspended, death, penalty, guilty ,charges , illegal ,pig ,additive ,scandal //26 Jul 2011 Recently, the illegal pig feed additive clenbuterol was discovered in China and arrests were made.But now, it has been announced that the court in China has handed sentences to those involved.One person received a suspended death penalty. The Intermediate People's Court of Jiaozuo, in Henan province, found the defendants guilty of "endangering public security by using dangerous means". The five people who received sentences by the Chinese court are clenbuterol producer, Liu Xiang, who was handed a death sentence with a two-year reprieve.His wife, Liu Honglin, who was found to be an accomplice, was sentenced to nine years for buying raw materials he used in making the pig feed additive.Xi Zhongjie was sentenced to life in prison.Xiao Bing to 15 years and Chen Yuwei to 14 years. The court stated in the verdict that they produced and sold lean meat powder despite it being harmful.The accused distributed the substance in Henan, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces and five other provincial regions. In court it was found that Liu Xiang and Xi produced and sold 2,700 kilogrammes of the additive, making profit of 2.5 million yuan ($387,000); Chen Yuwei, Zhengzhou-based, capital of Henan province, sold more than 600 kilogrammes, with a profit of 700,000 yuan; and that Xiao Bing, based in Luoyang, Henan, sold 1,300 kilogrammes,making over 600,000 yuan. The accused stated that there were no reports in which consumers got ill as a result of eating clenbuterol-tainted meat. Clenbuterol, harmful to humans, promotes lean meat in pig production and reels in higher pig meat prices in China.The additive also allows meat to get to market sooner. Ripping apart a novel and starting over in real life For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you probably know that I’ve been struggling with writing my second novel.About a year ago, I came up with a characters and let them looseВ on the page.From the beginning, a sense of uneasiness filled me.Something is wrong. Since I’m excellent at denial, I squashed that thought and pressed on, convinced that it would work out in the end. It didn’t. One character refused to act.Another screamed at her husband (or sister) at the drop of a hat.Another tried to swoop in like Superman and save the day.None acted sympathetically, really. Halfway through the first draft, I found that there was a different story thread that intrigued me more than the original one.Fine.But continuing on meant balancing two very serious topics (adultery and growing up fatherless) and doing justice to both. I finished the first draft, sighed with relief, and began the second draft.Two-thirds of the way in, I realized that I had too many subplots cluttering the main story.I cut two of them.Ah, this is better, I told myself.On I marched to draft number three. Three chapters into the third draft, I stopped.The uneasy feeling of something being wrong refused to go away.I knew what I had to do to save my novel. Rip it apart. And I mean rip it apart at the seams.The entire scenario has changed and with it, the characters change, the plot changes, the mood and theme and dialogue and every single scene is affected by this unraveling of my novel. I have started over.It’s like writing a first draftprobably the hardest part of novel-writing for meall over again.Yet some things are easier.I know my characters at a deeper level than I did the first time I met them.I know a few major plot points will remain unchanged.I know it will work this time.I look back at my files of the first few drafts and I see where I went wrong.I’ve gotten to start again. Sometimes in my life, I’ve wanted to start over and not known how. I muddle through the same situations over and over.My romantic relationships in college are a cla*sic example. Get depressed. It’s not until my lifeВ ripped apart at the seams that anything got better. Around my junior year of college, I hit bottom and found my life, my ideas, my preconceived ideas about God and men and myself, all lying in pieces around me.It was devastating.It was also a chance to start over. The old way wasn’t working.I couldn’t force it to work, no matter how hard I tried.So, just like with my novel, I had to start over.The process was (and is) painful.I fumble for words as I write and I muddle through my days in much the same way.But I hope that when this life is over, the end result will be beautiful. How To Tell Real Whisky From Fake- Faster Methods for distinguishing between authentic and counterfeit Scotch whisky brands have been devised by scientists at the University of Strathclyde.
Researchers from the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry have found new ways to compare the content of whisky samples to determine if they are the whisky on the label or an imitation brand. A series of blind tests successfully put the real whisky brand and the fakes in the right categories.The system could enhance the technology industry uses to tackle the trade in illicit whisky, which costs huge sums in lost revenue and threatens brand reputation. Professor David Littlejohn, who led the research, said: «The whisky industry has tools at its disposal for telling authentic and counterfeit whisky brands apart but many of them involve lab-based analysis, which isn’t always the most convenient system if a sample needs to be identified quickly. «There’s a growing need for methods that can provide simpler and faster identification and we have developed a method which could be adapted for devices to use on site, without the need to return samples to a lab.It could be of great benefit to an industry which is hugely important to the economy.» The researchers analysed 17 samples of blended whisky, looking at the concentration of ethanol in the samples without diluting them and the residue of dried whisky.They did so with mid-infrared spectrometry, used with immersion probes that incorporate novel optical fibres developed by Scottish based company Fibre Photonics Ltd who co-sponsored the research.The procedures developed can provide prompt, accurate analysis without the complexity and cost of some other systems. The levels of ethanol and colourant led them to identify correctly the eight authentic and nine counterfeit samples. Financial support for the project was provided by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Fibre Photonics Ltd and WestCHEM, a joint research school formed by the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow.The SFC funding was for a studentship through its SPIRIT (Strategic Priority Investments in Research and Innovation Translation) programme.The project research paper has been published in Analytica Chimica Acta.

Always be careful to Ward Off The above was another move that we practiced in isolation.We worked from one side of the body to the other side.Key points were the correct weight shift, turning points, and proper positioning of the hands as we went from one side to the other.Shifu made sure we understood that the motion did NOT go straight from one side to the other, but that we had to appropriately position our hands as we moved in order that we NOT be trapped by an opponent pressing or pushing on us as we shifted positions.At all times we have to maintain appropriate ward off.This was a tough exercise, very demanding on the legs and endurance. Shifu also demonstrated where in the motion, we had to be aware of how the opponent could try to counter us with a press or push, or body weight shift and bumping.
